Taken Review

With Taken 2 in the works, it only made sense that I should finally get around to watching and reviewing the first. Taken follows the story of Bryan Mills (Liam Neeson), an ex-CIA agent, who has his daughter stolen away from him, and takes it upon himself to track down her kidnappers, and see personally to their collective demises. I will warn those of you planning vacations and trips to exotic locales soon, I'd recommend waiting till after the trip to watch the film, as it may make you shy away from foreign travel for quite some time. Anyways, on with the full review, after the jump.
If you are expecting anything brilliant and revolutionary from Taken, you are not going to find it. What you will find however is a solid, no holes-barred action flick. The film is able to make due with a very simple premise, which actually presents a rather enjoyable thrill ride, and makes for a good movie overall. Taken is 'Bourne' without the conspiracy. There is no plot twist, no muddled past or uncertain future,  simply one mission- tracking down and rescuing his daughter from the clutches of evil men, and making sure they regret it until their last breath.
Taken offers some true action, thankfully not resorting to shaky-cam shots like many modern films trying to cover up shoddy or mediocre fight scenes. With each scene you feel the intensity of the situation as each muzzle flashes, and every bullet makes contact with it's target, and the film will certainly get your adrenaline pumping in it's more exhilarating sequences.
Liam Neeson fits the role of Bryan Mills like the little glass slipper fit Cinderella. He is completely believable as the grizzled, paranoid old man. The film ultimately revolves around his performance, as all focus is put on his protagonistic role, and he certainly doesn't disappoint.
Ultimately, Taken is a simple, formulaic action flick, but it's a rather good one. Neeson captures his character to a tee, and if you've been searching for a good dose of action, Taken is the perfect medication. If you've tired of the mediocre, shaky cam action films recently on the market, I'd say put your trips on hold and sit down for this one.
