Trailer Tuesday: Star Trek Into Darkness

The new trailer for the second installment in the Star Trek reboot made an appearance during the Super Bowl, and of course we must talk about it. Although it aired against many other thirty second trailers, it stood out to me as one of the most exciting. I'll explain what made the trailer look out-of-this-world in comparison to other teasers after the jump.
The teaser instantly draws you in with explosions and an epic composition, all drawn together by Benedict Cumberbatch's gravelly and menacing voice. I think the seriousness of his villain could make or break the film, but after seeing him in Sherlock, I'm very hopeful that he won't disappoint. His story looks to be a personal one, and if he has proper reason to take on Kirk and his crew, it could get very interesting.
I think this may be a very personal story indeed, and I think we get a glimpse of it as someone (who appears to hold a likeness to Benedict Cumberbatch) raises his hands up as if to curse the world, amidst wreckage and flames. The trailer also features a rather damaged and helpless looking U.S.S. Enterprise falling aimlessly towards Earth, which could have some interesting ramifications if our favorite captain and crew happen to be on-board.
Some of the later cuts shoot back and forth rather quickly between commanding looking shots of Chris Pine and Benedict Cumberbatch, and I think the two should make for a very interesting rivalry indeed. I can only hope that the scene in which the Cumberbatch appears to have let himself get captured plays out differently from other films, as the 'I surrender' tactic has been used by an onslaught of villains this past movie season.
All in all I think Star Trek Into Darkness looks very promising, we just have to hope that Mr. Abrams doesn't get overwhelmed with taking the helm at Star Wars franchise, and that he can keep churning out quality films like the ones he has directed as of late.
