Ruby Sparks Review

Ruby Sparks is the story of a girl, who is written into existence by a writer that has fallen in love with his words. Calvin, an already-successful writer, is struggling to find inspiration for his next work, and finds himself writing about a girl, only to have her appear in the flesh days after.  It has a unique premise, but is Ruby Sparks best left on paper? I give my full review after the jump.
The idea of the film is certainly an intriguing one, and it would obviously have to be approached just right, in order for it to work. Ruby Sparks stars Paul Dano as the down-on-his-luck writer, Calvin, who has caught a major case of writer's block. Zoe Kazan plays Ruby Sparks, a girl who has escaped the mind of Calvin, and is now part of his life.
The film is quite an emotional journey, and this is what makes it so enjoyable. Ruby Sparks is a film that doesn't pull any of it's punches, and is able to be brutally honest with it's audience, revealing many truths about love, and the many twists and turns it can take. The story is absolutely marvelous, and it is clear that there was something more to the film. The fantastic flow which the film achieves is largely due to Zoe Kazan, who is far more than just an actress in the film. Kazan actually took it upon herself to write the entire screenplay, as well as play the role she brought into existence. This makes her character more real than a lot of characters I've seen in current cinema, and it's no surprise thinking, "Wow, she was perfect for that role!" when you walk out of the theater.
Paul Dano also seems to be extremely well suited for his role. He wears a certain sadness (which was seen full force in his role in Little Miss Sunshine), and is able to make Calvin a character that you find difficult to root for. Every character in the film is dimensional and changing, and it makes you wonder what happens when they leave the screen, which is what a good movie should do.
Ruby Sparks also features a few rather entertaining appearances from some surprising actors and actresses, and I won't mention them here, as it's best to experience it yourself. The film is a good snapshot of love, what it looks like, and how it works, and it's very enjoyable because of this.
While it is a story of love, it's easily recommendable. It's funny, intriguing, cute, and at times, brutal. It captures the full spectrum of love, in all it's ugliness and beauty, and makes for quite a good film. Ruby Sparks is a great example of everything a movie should be, which makes it a true masterpiece.
