Trailer Tuesday: Looper and Jack Reacher

After a long vacation, I'm back, and today we're looking at some rather interesting new action films. I'll be talking about the new full-length trailer for the futuristic action film Looper, as well as the self-titled cinema adaption of Lee Child's Jack Reacher series. I delve into the new previews right after the jump.
We've finally gotten the full trailer for the new film Looper, starring Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon Levitt, and it looks to be quite an intriguing premise. For those of you who haven't seen the original teaser, Looper chronicles the story of a group of the future's assassins, known as Loopers. These men exist at various points in time, and whenever mob bosses have a hit, they send the body back in time for the Loopers to terminate, and dispose of the body. Joseph Gordon Levitt plays Joe, one of the many time-travelling hitmen. It did seem odd that Gordon-Levitt shared the same name as the protagonist, but perhaps it was an attempt to make the main character more allegorical, and have the inner conflict resonate with the audience more smoothly, utilizing the Average Joe mentality. Gordon Levitt's character is thrown a curve-ball however, when his bosses send back his future self as the next hit.
The new trailer illustrates the story a little better, and thankfully does so without seeming to give away too much of the film. The beginning of the teaser shows Joseph Gordon Levitt (with the aid of quite a few prosthetics, make-up and sky blue contacts to make him look more Bruce Willis-y) meeting with his future self in a diner, and they seem to be having a rather wary chat, before things explode into violence. I truly think the film has a unique opportunity to play off of it's intriguing premise here, and I hope it leans more towards intelligent execution than invigorating action. The fight scenes in the trailer do look intense, and hopefully they are backed by some interesting dialogue, because who wouldn't hesitate before terminating their own future self?
I was happily surprised to see Emily Blunt as Joe's significant other, and she brings more talent to what is already a rather impressive cast. There is even a tease of a scene where she appears to be manipulating an object through some sort of telekinesis, so I am interested to see what futuristic aspects the film introduces. The trailer ends with a rotating shot of Gordon-Levitt falling from a fire escape, a shot eerily similar to his gravity-defying hallway brawl in Inception. I think the film will rely an awful lot on the accuracy of Gordon Levitt's take on Bruce Willis, and if the two leads are able to play off each other well, I think the movie could prove to make good on an interesting concept.
The other trailer that has piqued my interest stars Tom Cruise as the titular action hero from the Lee Childs books, Jack Reacher. The book tells the story of a 6'5", physically massive ex-cop, who is out for justice, regardless of the law. Now you may have noticed a bit of a contradiction there, with 5'7" Cruise starring in the role, who's been known to wear elevator shoes on the red carpet, to seem more equal in height to his recently ex-wife. Fans have already started an outcry against his casting, and it does seem a little off. I think it may be important to distance the film a bit from the book in order to look at the movie on it's own, as clearly some changes have been made.
The trailer shows that Cruise is certainly no newcomer to the action genre, and I have no gripes or doubts about his ability to pull off the explosive scenes, as the trailer illustrated. While I haven't read the book myself, from the trailer Cruise's character looks to be a violent blend of Ryan Gosling's driver and Cruise's own special operative Ethan Hunt. The trailer looks to be more of a validation of Cruise's ability to pull off the character, so I'm interested to see a trailer that delves into the story more. I think the film looks to be a gritty and exciting, but I think the trailer will likely leave die hard fans of the series wanting more. Either way, we've got some very interesting new movies to look forward to from this Tuesday, and I can't wait to see how things play out.
