Trailer Tuesday: Pitch Perfect and Sinister

Trailer Tuesday has rolled around once again (all too unfortunately missing the new Twilight trailer debuting tomorrow, what a shame). Today I will be talking about two drastically different trailers, one for the new a capella comedy Pitch Perfect, and another for the upcoming horror film Sinister, which pairs up the producer of both Insidious and Paranormal Activity, with the writer/director of The Exorcism of Emily Rose. I give my thoughts on both after the jump.
Pitch Perfect is the story of a rebel girl turned singer, who, in a rather uncomfortable interruption to a perfectly good shower tune, is asked to join her college a capella group.
Suddenly she is thrust into the world of music, and must help her team win a the inter-collegiate singing competition. This seems to be a rather obvious cash in with the Glee audience, a pitch that I think will sell pretty well. In the beginning of the film in which the female protagonist Beca (played by Anna Kendrick) arrives at school, she is given an official 'BU Rape Whistle' and told not to, "blow it unless it's happening", and it looks like the film ultimately is trying to be to many things all at once.
It seems that Pitch Perfect will try to incorporate the college shenanigans of American Pie, the sing-songiness of Glee, and the cuteness of High School Musical all into one film. I think Pitch Perfect might bite off a little more than it can chew, and it looks like the film's formula would've worked better in a Broadway show.
The trailer does show some hope however. If the songs are catchy enough to gloss over the likely lacking story, the film may hit the right note. I think the movie also has a strong lead in Anna Kendrick, and after seeing her spot on performance in Up In the Air, I know she is more than capable of carrying a film such as Pitch Perfect on her shoulders. Luckily it looks as if she will have some help from Rebel Wilson of Bridesmaids, and from a quick glimpse, Elizabeth Banks will be in the mix as well. I think the usual Glee audience will be entertained by this one without a doubt, but as for the other audiences, I think it's best to hold back excitement for this one.
Now changing gears, and talking about the trailer for the new horror film Sinister. Upfront I'll say that I've never been the biggest fan of the genre, but I have ventured into it on few occasions. Luckily from it's first trailer, I think Sinister could be a treat for horror fans, mixing up the usual equation. It's starts off like most, a new family moving into a house in which a string of horrific events occurred in the past, but after that it did stray from the usual, piquing even my interest a bit.
Ethan Hawke plays Ellison, a writer who is determined to write, "The best book anybody's ever read", when he moves into the new house, but as expected, the house's history looks to interrupt his mission. He finds a box of old footage in the attic which reveals a curse a sets off the string of events in the movie, which is a likely nod to the unfortunate unoriginality of today's horror films, in which the recent slew of horror films have relied on the concept of 'found footage'.
It seems ever since Cabin in the Woods debuted in theaters, studios have been trying to shake up and inject some thought into a genre that has been somewhat mindless for a while, and Sinister looks to be one of these newer more self-aware horror films. I'm somewhat reassured of the films intelligence when the family actually realizes they must leave the house, and I think the film could be an original treat for horror fans out there looking for something different. While it certainly isn't a film that would be up my alley (mine is well light and un-intimidating) those of you with gloomier tastes might be in for a scare and a treat. I'd advise horror fans to keep their eyes on this one, despite the films tagline, "Once you see him, nothing can save you".
